  • An email address that translated as ‘We have come to slaughter’ was used to buy chemicals for the Manchester Arena bomb on Amazon, a court heard today.

Hashem Abedi, the brother of the bomber whose explosives were detonated in a deadly blast in May 2017,
was linked to the address, the Old Bailey was told.

Abedi allegedly helped build the bomb which killed
his older brother, Salman, and 22 others in the foyer outside the arena after a
concert by pop star Ariana Grande.

The Old Bailey was told that a Gmail address bedab7jeana@gmail.com was set
up to buy hydrogen peroxide, a vital ingredient for the TATP explosives,
    on March 20, 2017.

The email, translated from the Arabic, read: ‘To slaughter we have come’ or ‘We have come to slaughter’, Duncan Penny QC, prosecuting, told the court.

Hashem Abedi, 22, is on trial accused of helping his brother to assemble chemicals and materials to build TATP explosives
which were detonated in Manchester on May 22, 2017

Hashem Abedi’s temporary phone was in the same area, 20 minutes before the publicly
available Wifi was used at Hulme Market in Manchester to
    create the email address.

  • The Blair Walsh project: Minnesota Vikings kicker on USA’s World Cup chances and new coach Mike Zimmer

    By PETER CARLINE FOR MAILONLINE

As far as turning points go, it is a significant one.

In 2004, Blair Walsh was a soccer player, hurtling up and down the right wing for his High School in Boca Raton, Florida.

But with a booming right foot, team-mate Brett Swenson suggested he should
have a punt at booting a pigskin. The rest, as they
    say, is history.

‘So I tried it. I instantly felt good at it and I kind of liked
it a lot and decided I could possibly take it all the way to
the highest level,’ Walsh says as he prepares for
his third season in the NFL.

Record-breaker: Blair Walsh had the best debut season by a
kicker in NFL history, setting League record with 10 field goals of 50-plus and three of 50-plus in a game

‘I had to learn the technique of course but it was more mental
than anything. Just mentally prepare yourself just for
    the one scenario.

‘Soccer, you touch the ball and you touch it again in a couple of seconds you can have an impact
possibly on the game whereas kicking is more of a hey, you go
out there, you kick, you might not see it again and that’s just how it is.
Once you get used to that it’s fun.’

As followers of his Twitter page will attest, as well as watching
the fortunes of the Miami Heat and assorted golf tournaments, he still keeps a
close eye on the round ball.

And with the USA drawn in an unenviable World Cup group alongside Germany, Portugal and Ghana, the 24-year-old was realistic about the chances of progression.

‘I think we have the talent to make it an interesting group but
it’s going to be really tough to get out of it, that’s
    for sure.’

‘I like the overall direction of the programme under Jurgen [Klinsmann].
I’m not wild about a couple of the moves he’s made.

Heading in the right direction? Jurgen Klinsmann recently signed a new contract with the USA until 2018

‘You cannot convince me that [Landon] Donovan is not one of the best 23 players for the US side.

You never go 23 deep on a team anyway, so even if he was just brought there is more of a benefit than not having him
    there at all.’

‘I don’t know if I like the combination he’s going
with up front right now either. I think they should probably
go with [Chris] Wondolowski a bit more, that’s my opinion.

And as for the tournament as a whole?

‘I like Brazil, but I would say they have an immense amount of pressure being the host nation.
Germany. And a team like Belgium could come out of nowhere,’ he adds.

The Vikings did just that in Walsh’s record-breaking rookie year, winning their last four games
to surge into the play-offs, but after a tempestuous 5-10-1 season which
saw three starting quarterbacks, from the outside at least, they are a franchise in transition.

Head coach Leslie Frazier was replaced by Mike Zimmer, defensive stalwarts Jared Allen and Kevin Williams have departed and the Metrodome roof was deflated
    permanently after 31 eventful years.

A new sheriff in town: Mike Zimmer and Kyle Rudolph share a joke at Winter Park

    Vikings 2014 schedule

    Week 1: St Louis
    Week 2: New England
    Week 3: New Orleans
    Week 4: Atlanta
    Week 5: Green Bay
    Week 6: Detroit
    Week 7: Buffalo
    Week 8: Tampa Bay
    Week 9: Washington
    Week 10: Bye
    Week 11: Chicago
    Week 12: Green Bay
    Week 13: Carolina
    Week 14: New York Jets
    Week 15: Detroit
    Week 16: Miami
    Week 17: Chicago

What of coach Zimmer, who made several colourful cameos on HBO’s Hard Knocks during
stints as defensive co-ordinator for the Cowboys and the Bengals?

‘He is just a very serious person yet he knows how to
have fun and keep us light-hearted. But when it’s business time
it’s ready to go and in his first meeting he pretty much let
    us know that,’ Walsh explains.

‘He’s very different from the regime we had before. He keeps us accountable for
everything we do whether it’s in the weight room, practice field, meeting room.
We’re going to be held accountable for everything.

There’s competition everywhere, which is good, that brings out the best in guys and I
    think it’s a good change.’

While the new stadium, host of the Super Bowl
in 2018, is being constructed the team head outdoors to the University
of Minnesota’s TCF Bank stadium for two seasons.

‘I’m just trying to get better at trying to manage the weather conditions outside,’ said Walsh of the
conditions he will face. ‘I’ve been a tamed housecoat for the
past couple of years and you’ve got to grow up and go outside.

It should be fun. We’ve been down there a couple of times in practice
already to let us know what it’s all about.

Hefty right boot: Walsh tied the Vikings record for a field
goal with a 56-yarder against the Texans in 2012

‘We’ve had some good practice of playing in the
cold weather in the last couple of years: we had a game in Green Bay, that was in the mid teens and we played in a complete blizzard in Baltimore so we’ve had some good quality work in the
snow and the cold, so I’m much more concerned about
the open conditions and the wind rather than the cold.’

The Vikings won their first game of last season with a memorable
win over the Steelers in week five at Wembley (‘I loved the London trip – I’m kind of sad we’re not going back there this year,
‘ Walsh says), but despite a foreboding first five games, he can’t wait
to boot up for the curtain-raiser against the Rams.

‘St Louis were one of the teams that were looking at me when I came out of Georgia
and it’s always fun to play against those teams that were
giving you a look. We gave a good showing against them in 2012, so I’m sure that they’re going to give it their
best shot. We’ll be all jacked up and ready
    to go for it.’

Wembley winner: Adrian Peterson celebrates his second touchdown as the Vikings saw off the Steelers 34-27

  • For Andrew Nembhard, it’s an embarrassment of riches.

On any given possession, the Gonzaga point guard can throw the ball
down low to Drew Timme, the reigning Karl Malone Award winner as the nation’s top power forward (and
a finalist this season for the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award as the top center) or 7-foot
freshman phenom Chet Holmgren, a Malone finalist this year.

If the defense is packed into the lane, there’s Julian Strawther on the wing, averaging
12.6 points, or backcourt mate Rasir Bolton, who — like
    Nembhard — is averaging 10.5.

It’s no wonder the No. 1-ranked Bulldogs (22-2, 11-0 WCC) are the nation’s top scoring team with 89.9 points
a game entering Saturday’s West Coast Conference matchup with Santa Clara in Spokane, Wash.
Gonzaga can clinch its 10th consecutive regular-season WCC championship with a
    victory.

    Nembhard’s shot wasn’t falling Wednesday — he made just 1 of 8
from the field while scoring just 4 points — in Gonzaga’s 86-66 victory at Pepperdine.
So, he dished out a career-high 14 assists while handling a tough
defensive assignment against the Waves’ Houston Mallette, who finished
    with 25 points.

“That’s what he does, man,” Gonzaga coach Mark Few said.
“He’s an unbelievable passer, just a wizard in the ball screens. So we trust him, he’ll make the right read and he was making all the different reads and that’s kind of who he is.”

The 14 assists matched the second-most in Zags history — Joel Ayayi
last season — and was two shy of the record set by Blake
    Stepp in 2002.

Nembhard, whose previous high of 13 assists came against Long Beach State in 2019 while he was still at Florida,
said he just tries to stay with the basics.

“I think I was just trying to keep it simple of reading the defense, understanding what their coverages were and then just executing the game plan,” Nembhard said.
“I think I did that at a pretty high level. … They were kind of pressuring me with two guys. Just reading the defense and keeping it simple.”

That worked, as Timme scored 19 points and Holmgren added 18 points with 17 rebounds as
the Zags won their 15th consecutive game and are a victory away from their 21st
    conference regular-season championship in Few’s 23 seasons.

Few pointed out that Nembhard’s command of the game was not unusual
    for him.

“UCLA and some other huge games,” said Few, referring
to Nembhard’s 24 points and six assists in an 83-63 victory over the then-No.
2 Bruins on Nov. 23 in Las Vegas. He also had 22 points and 12 assists against BYU on in a
    90-57 rout on Feb. 5.

“Obviously, you can see how valuable he is to us. Then he was chasing Mallette around who’s a heckuva player and has a ton of freedom and that’s a really, really hard guard.”

Santa Clara (18-9, 8-4) is in third place in the conference after Thursday’s 84-80 victory at Loyola
    Marymount.

PJ Pipes had a team-high 19 points for the Broncos, Josip Vrankic added 18 and Keshawn Justice scored 16.

“Our guys kept their poise and composure and made some big free throws and got some stops at the end,” Santa Clara coach Herb Sendek said,
calling it, “A great road victory in a very difficult WCC.”

The Broncos will need an even greater effort Saturday as they have dropped 23 consecutive games against Gonzaga.

In the previous meeting between the schools on Jan. 15
in Santa Clara, the Zags prevailed 115-83 behind Timme’s 32
    points on 14-of-18 shooting.

“It’s obviously a short turnaround to get up to Spokane,”
Sendek said after Thursday’s game in Los Angeles. “We’ll regroup and catch our breath.”

competing to reach Singapore with limited cash
and without the use of modern technology- or flying.

Tonight BBC Two’s Race Across the World sees 10 people of different
ages race each other in a battle to make the journey, even turning to manual
    labour to fund their journey.

Instead of simply catching a 12-hour plane to Singapore,
five teams will embark on an epic, adrenaline filled and often frustrating journey which sees them forced to travel by land and rail in a bid to get to Singapore first and win a cash
    prize.

Armed with nothing but a paper map and £1,329, the cash equivalent of a
one-way airfare to Singapore, the duos will compete to win £20,000.

A fascinating new series will follow five teams who
are competing to reach Singapore without the use of modern technology and limited cash- and without flying.
Seen clockwise: Married couple Jinda and Bindu; Best friends Natalie and Shameema; Father and son Alex and Darron; Life-long friends Sue
and Clare; Business partners Felix and Josh

The five pairs, who come from all over the UK, face 34 hour bus journeys, hitch hiking and
manual labour in a bid to reach Singapore first – and they aren’t even allowed bank cards or smart phones.

The only technology they are allowed is a GPS for safety reasons,

In the first episode, the teams set off from Greenwich. They hand over their smart phones, credit
card and cash and are instead given a world map, a travel guide complete with local job adverts and
two money belts containing the cash equivalent of a one-way airfare to Singapore.

Felix and Josh find themselves in hot water after attempting to find a
    bus they need to catch

Finding themselves short of cash, they find some paid work as labourers at a
farm just outside Munich – despite one of them suffering from an injury

The teams must pass through five checkpoints to
reach their final destination, beginning with the ancient city of Delphi.

Sue and Clare, who are in their fifties, have been lifelong friends
since school and want to re-live and recapture the magic of the cross-Europe trip they made
    together 30 years ago.

During tonight’s episode a chance encounter helps them realise they should have
put a bit more planning into this crucial
    first leg.

Meanwhile Natalie and Shameema, best friends since school, are determined to save
money and adopt a very focused strategy to do just that.

Their main aim to to be nice to people along the way, in the hope they will repay this kindness with a train ticket or two.

    determined to save money

Throughout the first episode the pair use their charm to ensure
    they complete the first leg

Shameema, a separated mother-of-two, reveals: ‘Setting off into the unknown isn’t
    something I would normally do.

‘I don’t even own a backpack! But this trip has come at a great time for
me. I’ve been married for 19 years but we have decided it’s the right
    time for us to separate.

‘My two daughters are growing into strong independent woman and it’s almost like for the first time someone
has said to me, you don’t have to be responsible…
    and that feels quite nice.

‘People are going to want to do nice things for us because we are kind people,’ she laughs optimistically – and is
proven right, when later on in the episode the pair charm
a woman at a petrol station into offering to buy their tickets to Dover.

Now in their late 50s, Sue and Clare have been lifelong friends since school and want to re-live and recapture the magic of the cross-Europe trip they made together 30 years ago

With his copy of Sophocles in his rucksack, Felix, along with business partner Josh, is impatient to get going but quickly finds out how easy it is, with an estimated 50 days of the
journey still to go, to burn through their budget.

Finding themselves short of cash, they find some paid work as
labourers at a farm just outside Munich – despite one of
    them suffering from an injury.

Meanwhile, married couple Jinda and Bindu’s strong negotiation skills stand them
in good stead although they were dismayed
to find Felix and Josh on the same France-bound ferry as them on the first day.

Married couple Jinda (pictured) and Bindu’s strong negotiation skills stand them in good stead although they were
dismayed when they hear some bad news about Jinda’s mother

The couple were dismayed to find Felix and Josh on the same France-bound ferry as them

‘I don’t want to sit with them because they keep talking,’ Jinda
said grumpily, suggesting that tempers are already starting to fray.

Later, an unexpected emergency has their trip hanging in the balance.

Jinder receives an emergency call from the hospital on a producer’s phone.

Her mother, who has been ill for the last three months, is in hospital and she
has taken a turn for the worst.

She said: ‘My mum was really keen for us to do it, and my dad was
too. They said carry on doing what you’re doing, everyone is running around and me being there won’t make a huge difference.

‘I could finish all this and she could be in the same situation so everyone
is telling me to carry on, so that’s what we will do.’

Darron and son Alex eventually find themselves stranded in Belgrade – is it all over for them?

‘I feel helpless in the situation with my mum, she would be the most proud person if we won.’

As the first day draws to a close, father and son, Darron and Alex have yet to leave London – they’re patiently waiting for
an overnight coach to Germany, aiming to leap-frog their fellow competitors and get ahead of the pack in the dash to Delphi.

After a very uncomfortable journey, they find their determination paid off
    – they arrived in Dusseldorf 250 miles closer to Delphi than the rest of the
    competitors.

‘Most people would go from a to b on a plane. But then they
    miss all this,’ says Darron.

But his enthusiasm is somewhat dampened when the pair
    find themselves stranded in Belgrade.
